ARABIAN CULTURAL FESTIVAL AND EXHIBITION AT AWARE

We visited the Arabian Cultural Festival and exhibition at AWARE in Surra, yesterday. The exhibition was quite nice, which had 30 vendors who displayed a variety of items such as wooden camels, photography, paintings, carpets, bisht (a special arabian cloak worn by men), soveniers, decorative items, exquisite artificial jewellery and there was sampling of Arabian food. There was quite a response from the public. I will blog about some of the vendors and their businesses in my upcoming posts. AWARE also shared with those interested, about their various activities such as guided tours of buildings in Kuwait with importance to architectural, cultural or heritage  of Kuwait, seminars and classes that were being held. The exhibition was held for one day. Here are some pictures from the exhibition.

HORROR MOVIE HUMOUR

I love in horror movies how the person yells out “hello?!” as if the killer is gonna say “yeah I’m in the kitchen, want a sandwich?”

WEIGHT LOSS - TWO THINGS THAT WILL HELP YOU LOSE

In all my weight loss posts, I have always been reminding myself and other weight loss aspirants that the open secret of losing weight is a healthy diet and exercise. Well, there are two important things you can do to help you lose weight effectively and steadily. Stay stress-free and get plenty of sleep! And you want to know how and why these two things help?

Get good sleep (6 to 8 hours every day)

Stay Stress free
In a study that was conducted, reseachers said, that those with lower stress levels were able to lose more weight than their counterparts.  People who slept for 6 to 8 hours a night were able to lose weight faster than compared to those who got less sleep. Chronic stress boosts levels of feel-hungry hormones, which leads many people to seek comfort in high calorie foods to deal with anxiety. Many of the high calorie foods not only make you put on weight, but they're also addictive, so the more you eat, the more you crave. Lack of sleep can interfere with your metabolism, that increases the appetite while making you too lazy to exercise.

A FLAMENCO JOURNEY WITH JUAN CARLOS GOMEZ PASTOR

A beautiful Spanish Flamenco fusion music was presented by the gifted Spanish guitartist Juan Carlos Gomez Pastor, to a packed audience,  at Maidan Cultural Center on Wednesday evening, accompanied by his brother Luis Miguel Gomez on guitar, Jose Miguel Galera on guitar and Pablo Gomez - percussion and flute. H.E. the Ambassador of Spain gave a speech introducing Juan Carlos Gomez and his music. The music was inspired  by nature,  transporting the audience emotionally through different environments like mountains, lakes shapes and colours. The flamenco guitar concert had two dimensions - dreams and passion, that comprised of elements of classical, folk and modern music. The concert was organized by DAI.

I didn't carry my camera or mobile with me, and further,  photography inside the auditorium is prohibited.

HAPPINESS

You cannot wait until you are rich, thin, loved, pampered to allow yourself to feel happiness. Expressing happiness is a prerequisite to prosperity and abundance and not the other way around as most people assume. - Ryan. A. SENSE OF AN ENDING BY JULIAN BARNES WINS MAN BOOKER PRIZE 2011

Julian Barnes with his Man Booker Prize 2011 winning book Sense of an Ending

Julian Barnes, 65 year old British author,  is the winner of this year's £50,000 Man Booker Prize for Fiction for his book 'The Sense of an Ending', published by Jonathan Cape. Chair of the 2011 judges, Dame Stella Rimington, made the announcement at London's medieval Guildhall, during the Awards Dinner yesterday, October 18. Jon Aisbitt, Chairman of Man, presented Julian Barnes with a cheque for £50,000.

Man Booker Prize website describe 'The Sense of an Ending', a 150 page novel,  as a truly wonderful novel that will have the reader immersed in the story from the very first page, and all the while, marvelling at the precision of Barnes’ prose.  It is the story of a seemingly ordinary man who, when revisiting his past in later life, discovers that the memories he holds are less than perfect. Tony is in middle age. He's had a career and a marriage, a calm divorce. He gets along nicely, he thinks, with his one child, a daughter, and even with his ex-wife. He's certainly never tried to hurt anybody. Memory, though, is imperfect. It can always throw up surprises, as a lawyer’s letter is about to prove. The unexpected bequest conveyed by that letter leads Tony on a dogged search through a past suddenly turned murky. And how do you carry on, contentedly, when events conspire to upset all your vaunted truths? The Sense of an Ending is the story of one man coming to terms with the mutable past. Laced with trademark precision, dexterity and insight, this is the work of one of the world's most distinguished writers.

Julian Barnes lives in London; he is the author of ten novels, three books of short stories and three collections of journalism. His work has been translated into more than thirty languages. In France, he won both the Prix Médicis (for Flaubert's Parrot) and the Prix Femina (for Talking it Over), the only writer to have won both prizes.  He is an officer of L’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres. He won the Austrian State Prize for European Literature in 2004 and the David Cohen Prize for Literature in 2011 for his lifetime achievement in literature. Julian Barnes has been shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize three times previously, for Arthur and George in 2005, England, England in 1998 and Flaubert's Parrot in 1984.

Asked what he would spend the £50,000 prize money on, Barnes said a new watch strap was first on his list. "I could buy a whole new watch."

WORLD'S BEST TOUR GUIDE AWARD BY WANDERLUST GOES TO NOEL BRUNO DAWSAN OF SRI LANKA

Wanderlust (magazine) World Guide Awards ceremony for 2011, was held at the Royal Geographical Society. This is held each year,  in recognition of travel guides who carry out their work with passion and care and have been voted for by tourists based on their personal experiences with the guide. A guide can  turn your trip into an experience of a lifetime. Sri Lankan tour guide Noel Bruno Dawsan, has been selected as the world's best guide world, has won a £5,000 bursary and was lauded as a 'true cultural ambassador' by the judges.  He was also last year's Bronze award winner. Noel Bruno Dawsan says he is delighted and will help disadvantaged people into further education with his bursary. Noel is of Indian origin, who comes from a family of impoverished tea pickers in a remote Sri Lankan town. "The difference with Bruno is that instead of just hearing about his country, he made you feel about it," judge Mark Carwardine, author and wildlife expert, said.

Being a teacher myself, I sat in awe of his enthusiasm and awareness of Sri Lanka’s past, present and future. He is proactive in keeping his travellers comfortable and happy. We laughed heartily, shed quiet tears of admiration and thoroughly enjoyed his enthusiasm for life and love for his homeland, where we felt we were honoured visitors.”, stated a tourist and supporter.

Italian Gaetano Barone was the runner up who won the silver award winner with a  £2,500 bursary and the bronze winner was Kevin Albin from UK with a £1,500 bursary, all of which will be spent on worthwhile projects of their choices. Further prizes at the event were provided by Swarovski Optik, Nomad Travel Store and Powertraveller.

CHINESE CALLIGRAPHY ON THE GROUND USING WATER

When Nicholas Hanna, a Canadian media artist first moved to  Beijing in China, he was impressed with the water calligraphy people created in the parks which involved using a large brush to paint Chinese calligraphy on the road, in water and ofcourse, the characters disappear when water evaporates. Hanna created a cargo tricycle, with a computer-controlled dot matrix water release system, that squirts out passages of Chinese poetry on the road behind him as he rides. Quite interesting isn't it? Unlike graffitti on the walls, there won't any permanent markings on the road, after all, being water, it would disappear when it evaporates.
