Charlie Chaplin, the genius English slapstick and visual comedy actor, film director and composer was best-known for his work during the silent film era. He became one of the most famous film stars in the world before the end of World War I. He died on Christmas day in 1977 at the age of 89. He lived a long and productive life, clouded with fear and sorrow, trouble and controversies. Yet, Charlie Chaplin brought joy and laughter to his millions of fans and certainly many a "smile".
Yesterday I was watching a movie on TV, and one of the scenes had an actress singing this timeless song "Smile" and I thought of sharing it in my blog! A lot of people don't know that 'SMILE' was the theme music for Charlie Chaplin's last silent picture 'Modern Times' in 1936. It became officially 'Smile' when John Turner and Geoffrey Parsons added lyrics to Chaplin's composition in 1954. Nat 'King' Cole recorded the song and it became a hit! Enjoy the lyrics....
(Music by Charles Charlie Chaplin -- Lyrics by John Turner and Geoffrey Parsons)
Smile though your heart is aching
Smile even though it's breaking
When there are clouds in the sky
You'll get by
If you Smile through your fear and sorrow
Smile and maybe tomorrow
You'll see the sun come shining through
For you
Light up your face with gladness
Hide every trace of sadness
Although a tear may be ever so near
That's the time you must keep on trying
Smile- What's the use of crying
You'll find that life is still worthwhile
If you just smile.
Smile even though it's breaking
When there are clouds in the sky
You'll get by
If you Smile through your fear and sorrow
Smile and maybe tomorrow
You'll see the sun come shining through
For you
Light up your face with gladness
Hide every trace of sadness
Although a tear may be ever so near
That's the time you must keep on trying
Smile- What's the use of crying
You'll find that life is still worthwhile
If you just smile.
