WARD OFF HEART DISEASE WITH NEW BREED OF SUPER BROCCOLI

Professor Richard Mithen

A new breed of broccoli has been developed by a team of British scientists, that contains two to three times the normal amount of glucoraphanin, a nutrient believed to help ward off heart disease. Glucoraphanim breaks down fat in the body and signifcant amounts of this nutrient is only found in Broccoli! Richard Mithen, of the Institute of Food Research in Norwich, lead  the team of scientists who made the broccoli breakthrough, said, "Vegetables are a medicine cabinet already. When you eat this broccoli … you get a reduction in cholesterol in your blood stream."

A compound called sulforaphane found in broccoli has been shown to block genetic glitches that trigger tumours. Sulforaphane is obtained when it breaks down the compound glucoraphanin in broccoli. But the human body may not get enough of these compounds just from eating normal broccoli once or twice a week. The new variety, developed in Norfolk, contains concentrated levels of glucoraphanin. It's called Beneforte Super Broccoli, and has been made available in California and Texas over the last year, but has recently been revealed in London as well. Slightly sweeter (due to less sulphur) and more nutritious version will be made available in USA this fall.

“It’s not genetically modified, it’s nothing to do with GM. “It’s just a normal breeding programme”, said Professor Richard Mithen.

DUTCH ARTIST TO MAKE ICE PRODUCING GLACIER IN THE DESERT

Dutch artist Ap Verheggen

Image by Ap Verheggen, a digital artist impression showing a solar panel installation in the desert with ice-making capabilities

Dutch artist Ap Verheggen has expressed his plans to create a leaf-shaped "glacier" in the desert, which will produce a layer of ice on the leaf's ridged underside.  The 200 square meter (2,153 square feet) surface of the leaf will be covered with solar cells. Under the face of the elm leaf-shape structure will be cooling condensers that soak up humidity from the desert air. Even in the hottest conditions, it will produce a layer of ice on the leaf's ridged underside, as per the theorey.

"I give inspiration. What you can do with it is up to others. You have to open the borders of your thinking. To make ice in the desert is breaking down the border, and that is opening a new world. The project demonstrates that in a totally hopeless environment you can still generate hope. Let's accept the climate is changing. We have to see that as a challenge, to find new ways to deal with the changes in climate circumstances. There are solutions, and it all depends on human ingenuity. It all depends on us. Tests would be conducted next year, after which, sculpting of the massive work will begin. An unidentified north African country will be the first to host it." said Verheggen.

Scientist Andras Szollosi-Nagi says Verheggen's work falls at the crossroads of art, environment and science. "It's an amazing piece, it's very unusual and that makes it very exciting."

WHAT DO YOU ATTRACT?

If you have thoughts of joy and peace, then you  will be vibrating at a higher frequency and joyful and peaceful things will become attracted to you.

(Based on the law of vibration  which means everything in the universe is energy and that everything is in a constant state of vibration. The law of attraction states,  like attracts like, so things that vibrate at a harmonic frequency are attracted to each other. When you control your thoughts you control your vibration, therefore attracting what you are focused on.)

WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS FOR THE WEEKEND?

What are your plans for the weekend? Are you planning some interesting, or exciting to do? The weather is beautiful...though it's been slightly humid..somehow camouflaged by light breeze. Perfect weather to be outdoors after 4pm! As for me, I'm still thinking!

CALVIN AND HOBBES

"People think it must be fun to be a super genius, but they don't realize how hard it is to put up with all the idiots in the world.” - Calvin (Calvin and Hobbes)

DO YOU LOVE SWEETS? THEN YOU MIGHT HAVE A SWEET PERSONALITY

A recent study states that people who love sweets have a sweeter personality than others who don't!

A study by researchers at Gettysburg College in Pennsylvania, St Xavier College in Chicago and North Dakota State University found a connection between the foods people chose and their personality types. The participants in their study, who chose chocolate were found to be more helpful and friendly than people who chose a savoury item. Sweet eaters were also found to be nicer by other people.

Are you perceived as someone with a sweet personality? Then, do you love love sweets, cakes and/or  chocolates? (even if you have been staying away for health reasons). I wonder if savoury lovers would agree to this, especially if they have a sweet personality sans the love for sweets.

WALKING FOR EXERCISE AT THE WATERFRONT

Needlesss to say how important walking is for exercise; it's really, one of the best outdoor exercise you could get on a regular basis. Now that the weather is fantastic, get into your walking shoes and go outdoors and exercise. Where? The best places to walk in Kuwait, are the paved walkways at the Waterfront - the coastline along Gulf Road, or the public parks and the Avenues Mall. These are the three places I frequent for my regular walks. When I got a little bored walking everyday at the public park in Salmiah, I decided to add some interesting change to my agenda. I decided to walk twice a week at the Waterfront (adjacent Marina Cresent), thrice a week in the park and once a week at the Avenues Mall. And now I am enjoying my walks immensely. I prefer to walk when there is daylight, so I can see everything around me and cherish the nature around me and head home by sunset. The sea is beautiful, so is the sky..and there are so many people walking, running and cyling at the waterfront. Very encouraging when you see them.  Well, it shouldn't really matter what part of the day you choose to exercise,...as long you exercise!. Here are some pictures I took during my walk yesterday at the Marina Waterfront. Oh one more thing, on a clear day, the sunset at Marina Waterfront around 5.20pm to 5.30pm, is just absolutely amazing. Yesterday the skies were hazy so I couldn't capture the sunset. Will do that on a clearer day.

HAVE YOU EXPERIENCED HANGER? WHAT IS HANGER?

While you say 'HANGER', give prominence to the 'g' while you say the word. 'Hanger' is a term used to describe what happens when you are hungry and angry. If you are going through one of those days, irritable and prone to anger, but upon having a hearty meal, you feel good, more at peace, and in better spirits, then it's possible you were hungry. When you skip your meal like breakfast or lunch, the low blood sugar can get you into a terrible mood. So, don't skip the most important meals of the day - breakfast and lunch, ...take care of your your moods and health. As for dinner, a light meal should suffice.

HUMOUR - CHILD'S ENDLESS QUESTIONS

STRUGGLING TO GET SLEEP? TRY THESE FIVE FOODS

If you are struggling to get sleep or tend to work late into the night and get less than 6 hours of sleep everyday, that's not good news for your health or well being. You don't want to be tired and sluggish at work due to lack of sleep right? Everyone loves the feeling of feeling fresh, energetic with clarity of mind and face a new day with zest. Whatever may be your reason for sleeplessness, it's vital you get good sleep or you are pushing your body towards illness. Let's explore what are the five foods can help you sleep.

A few hours (2 to 3 hours) before bedtime, have any of these 5 items to get sound sleep.

1.   Almonds: A handful contains muscle-relaxing They contain magnesium which relaxes your muscles and  tryptophan which induces sleep.
2.   Bananas: They contain natural sleep regulators.
3.   Skim milk:  A warm glass of milk will help you sleep with its natural sedative effect.
4.   Oatmeal:  Contains sleep regulating melatonin. If you drizzle just a little honey on top, the combination will help you snooze.
5.   Whole-wheat bread: A slice of toast  will get you to sleep.

A tried and tested sure sleep inducer for me is milk and banana. I have 200 ml fresh milk at 7pm in the evening and a banana at 8.30 or 9pm and it works (not only as an aid to weight loss, but helps me to sleep well!) If you prefer fresh skim milk, you could have that. Personally I prefer fresh whole milk. Let me share a secret...that's my dinner!
