MOONLIT EVENING MARINA WATERFRONT

Friday 11-11-11 was special to many people due to various myths and beliefs surrounding this special date. I usually finish my walk before sunset. It was a busy day for me and I ended up going for my walk after 6.30pm in the evening. When I looked up at the sky, it was full moon night and the view from Marina Crescent and Marina waterfront was quite spectacular. The moon seemed to shine luminously on the entire city. I cannot do justice to the beauty of the full moon, and the surroundings with the pictures I captured. Some breath taking moments are just to be experienced. Anyways, here are some pictures I took  that evening. Something  really nice I experienced  on 11-11-11.

TREASURE CHEST WITH GOLD

A big treasure chest full of gold ornaments...a different sort of window decor for  GUESS KIDS wear outlet in Avenues Mall, Level 1. Perhaps the treasure chest represents the shop and the gold represents all the wonderful clothes they have for children.

DURIAN FRUIT

I have never tasted Durian fruit before. Don't know ..if I'd ever want to! I saw Durian fruit recently in a local hypermarket (see first picture on the top - thats the one I saw). It looks like a hedgehog on the outside with poky spines. The inside of the fruit is known to be yellowish with almond like seeds.  I always liked the way it looked from the outside, so different from the other fruits we are used to. It is believed that people consumed Durian  in southeastern Asia since pre historic times, but its known to the western world for about 600 years. What I found out about Durian is mix of good, strange and a bit shocking as well. Let me explain....

Okay, to begin with Durian is a native fruit of  Brunei, Indonesia and Malaysia. The good part is :

* Durian can give you a boost of good energy (like banana).
* Its high in dietary fibre.
* Rich source of Vitamin C
* Excellent source of several B Vitamins like niacin, riboflavin, pantothenic acid (vitamin B5), pyridoxine(vitamin B-6) and thiamin (vitamin B-1)
* Contains good amount of minerals like manganese, copper, iron and magnesium
* Good source of potassium
* Its easten either slightly ripened or well ripened.
* It is used in milkshakes, icecreams, cakes, biscuits,
* Unripe durian can be eaten either cooked or roasted.

Now for the strange and shocking part: Let's see what many people had to say from their experience, especially those who are exposed to the so called 'King of Fruits'  for first time.

* Smells like urine
* Smells like a child's soiled nappy that has not been changed for a while
* If a durian fruit falls on a person's head from the tree, it can be fatal!
* A walk through the vegetable stalls in Singapore or Bangkok during Durian season would give you the feeling as if you are walking through some sewage.
* English novelist Anthony Burgess once said that dining on durian is a lot like eating vanilla custard in a latrine.
* Smells like dead goat
* Smells like compost
* In Singapore there are signs on the subways saying "No Durian"
* The fruit stinks like gym socks
* It smells like vomit
* Horrible smell, but the taste is not horrible.
* Smells like turpentine
* If you eat too much of it, your body heats up

Oh...have you heard of this saying, 'Like a cucumber versus a durian'. (struggle between the weak and the strong. The strong, i.e. the durian) will always win.

Have you eaten Durian? If you haven't, would you try it out even if it smells..um..terrible?.

The Esplanade theatre in Singapore is called 'Durian' by the people, due to its Durian fruit like appearance.

GINGER : HEALTH BENEFIT, MYTHS AND BELIEFS

Ginger is believed to have several health benefits besides it culinary uses in our everyday lives. I use ginger in my cooking regularly and occasionally when we catch a cold or fever. And I love to have ginger tea (with milk and little sugar), which is quite rejuvenating. Reminds me, it's been a while since I made my self a cup of tea infused with ginger. Well, lets a look at all the wonderful medicinal benefits this wonder root ginger can offer us, and also, how about exploring certain beliefs and myths surrounding it.

* It is known to reduce arthritic joint pain.

* Studies have shown that when crushed root ginger is applied on the skin in and around the knee joint where rheumatic or arthritic pain is experienced, ir will considerably reduce or ease the pain, especially by repeated application.

* Alternately, 5 drops of ginger essential oil diluted in 20 drops of carrier oil (such as wheat germ and almond) can be used to lightly massage aching knees and joints.

* Helps lowers cholesterol.

* Ginger is used as a treatment for stomach cramping and diarrhea as it has anti bacterial properties and has calming and soothing effect on the digestive tract.

* It helps to cure travel sickness as it wards off nausea

* It alleviates seasickness and morning sickness.

* Ginger tea is consumed as remedy for colds--it can make you sweat, which can break a fever.

* In India, a ginger paste is applied to the temples as a treatment for headaches.

* It has anti-inflammatory, analgesic, nerve soothing, anti-pyretic as well as anti-bacterial properties

* Rich source of many essential nutrients and vitamins such as pyridoxine (vitamin B-6), pantothenic acid (vitamin B-5) that are essential for optimum health.

* Contains fair amount of important minerals like potassium, manganese, copper, and magnesium. Potassium is an important component of cell and body fluids that helps control heart rate and blood pressure.

* Ginger root slices boiled in hot water with added lemon or orange juice and honey is a popular herbal drink that helps relieve common cold, cough, and sore throat.

* Helps reduce migrane.

* It is supposedly a   powerful aphrodisiac.

* In Chinese traditional medicine, they see it as warming the blood and boosting the circulation.

* In some parts of the world, vocalists and singers have been known to take ginger before a performance to help clear the vocal chords, enabling a ‘purer’ and 'sweeter' tone to be produced while singing.

* Its used in a lot of meat and fish based recipes and cooking and used in garnishing as well.

* 50% of world's ginger is produced in India.

* Gingerbread man or gingerbread biscuits first appeared  in the court of Elizabeth I of England during the 15th century. She had the gingerbread figures made and presented to resemble some of her important guests.

* Crystallized ginger is made from fresh ginger cooked in a sugar syrup, then coated with granulated sugar which results in a crunchy, chewy, sweet and spicy treat or a snack (that should be eaten in moderation due to the sugar it contains). It can be added to desserts, confectionary items, baked goods, sauces and other dishes where sweet and spicy would complement each other.

* For hundreds of years it graced only the dinner tables of the upper class or royalty.

AND NOW FOR SOME BELIEFS AND MYTHS FROM DIFFERENT CULTURES

* White ginger jar in porcelain is a traditional Chinese wedding gift, with an inscription that has the Chinese symbol for happiness, prosperity and fertility or it is emblazoned with a logo of the Dragon & Phoenix on either side, the Dragon representing the groom and the Phoenix representing the bride!

* If a person receives a yellow chinese porcelain ginger jar as a gift, its meant for health and long life and its not considered appropriate for receiver to give it away.

* Ginger is considered a spiritual and heavenly herb in many cultures around the world!

* Its believed to bring luck to the person who carries it around. (I am not advocating this myth...it's something I read).

* Ginger placed along with silver in a sachet of leather,  will bring money!. (What about the right qualifications, landing the right job, effort and dedicated work?.hmmm...)

 * If a person dreams of a ginger cat, it will bring luck in money and business. (I never dreamt of a cat so far, but I did see a lovely ginger cat during my walk at the Marina waterfront last week)

LAUGHING AT OTHERS' EXPENSE

Some people laugh at others' expense and some are sadistic enough to laugh at others' misfortunes. A lot of humour can have a sharp edge to it. When a joke is shared and if the other person feels bad, it means he was hurt. Its important to interact with people in a way that protects their self esteem. When jokes are passed or shared, it should be something both parties can laugh at without being hurt which means treating people whoever they may be - spouse, friends, relatives, parents, children, co-workers, the housekeeper, with dignity and respect. Children too should be taught to respect others' feelings and treat others with dignity and not to joke in any hurtful manner.
