HITACHI - INCORRUPTIBLE QUARTZ GLASS FOR SUPER LONG TERM DATA STORAGE
Hitachi has come up with an incorruptible system that may allow data to last forever. Data is stored forming microscopic dots serving as binary codes within a piece of quartz glass. This should be easily readable using an optical microscope. Only thing being, several hundred years from now, the concept of binary code should still be understood to whoever is around then. The prototype developed by Hitachi is two centimeters (0.8 inches) square by two millimeters thick, incorporating four layers of dots. As of now, the memory capacity is40 megabytes per square inch, roughly equal to that of a music CD. The glass square is expected to withstand exposure to high-temperature flames and various harsh chemicals, and survived being heated to 1,000º C (1,832º F) for two hours. It is also unaffected by radio waves or immersion in water. Though glass is breakable, quartz is known for being particularly hard.

Well, Apple fans, those of you who've wished for smaller iPADS, your wish will be fulfilled shortly. Apple is reported to be launching their mini i-PAD between October 10 and October 17. So, these two dates are something to look forward to. It's reported that Apple's Asian suppliers have been busy with mass production of the mini i-PAD. The mini iPAD is to be available in the shops from November 2. In the meantime, Amazon will launch its range of tablets in UK.
It's also been reported that tablet will have a 7.85-inch LCD display with a lower resolution that the present 9.7-inch iPad. As for detailed specifications there are tech magazines and sites that report various combinations of specs based on 'leaked information' . On the whole one would have to wait for the official announcement from Apple to know what the mini i-PAD has to offer. It might even called something different than 'mini' iPAD.

LANTERN POWERED BY SALT WATER
Green House Co. Ltd, in Japan has developed an LED emergency lantern called GH-LED10WBW that runs on salt water!. The lantern weighs 680gram (23.98-oz). The lamp does not require any batteries rechargeable or otherwise to function. Just fill the lamp’s reservoir with salty water and voila!
All it requires is 16 grams (0.56 oz) of salt dissolved with 350 cc (11.83 oz) of water in a measuring bag and then poured into the lantern. The salt acts like an electrolyte in a simple wet battery, that uses a magnesium rod as an anode and a carbon rod as a cathode. During electrolysis, the magnesium ions travel to the carbon rod to generate electricity. The magnesium rod will have to be replaced with a new one, after 120 hours of usage, as it slowly gets destroyed by electrolysis.
The lantern produces 1.5 volts of DC power that can run its ten-LED white light, giving out 55 lumens of light. The lantern has a USB port to charge your devices at 4.5 volts. The LED lantern runs for eight hours before the saltwater needs replacing.
The LED lamp is intended for emergencies and recreation and will go on sale in Japan in mid-September 2012.

CURIOSITY ROBOTIC ROVER ON MARS
Curiosity a 2.5 billion dollar sophisticated nuclear powered robot, weighing one ton, that was sent to Mars landed successfully on August 5, making a flawless entry, descent and landing on Mars. It is expected to spend 2 earth years on Mars.
The rover has been taking lots of photos of the terrain and surroundings. The pictures document Martian landscape to have an earth like appearance. The surface has dark sand, red dust, and substrate rock which is tan. Curiosity is equipped with cameras, 10 scientific instruments to tackle the challenge, including an onboard chemistry lab and a device known as ChemCam which can shoot a laser at rocks and read the chemical signature that's encoded in the light that's given off. Curiosity's chemical analysis would be able to reveal whether Mars was potentially habitable in ancient times and about existence of water.

The Flyboard is a machine which allows propulsion underwater and in the air. It enables you to move underwater like a dolphin and challenge the gravity like a superman! The machine has nozzles that will be located under the feet and water shoots out through jets below the feet and hand grips to provide propulsion. It allows movement which depends on the feet tilt of the flyboarder and the nozzles on the hands are used to ensure stabilization as ski poles. CARDLESS ATM IN JAPAN
Have you wished you didn't have to carry all those ATM cards around in your wallet and there was an easier way to withdraw money or do transactions at the ATM machines? That way, you don't even have to worry about card theft or loss.
Well, Japanese banking group Ogaki Kyoritsu Bank will soon introduce biometric ATMs, under the tag line 'You are the cash card'. This will enable customers to access their accounts without bank cards or books. Customers can scan their palm, and enter a pin and their birthdate, to withdraw cash from the card-less system. What happens when the palm is scanned is, a “unique vein pattern of an individual’s palm” will be analysed to verify the customer.
The cardless ATM system is being developed by Japanese technology company Fujitsu and is expected to be introduced in September 2012. The need for cardless ATM became vital after last year's earthquake and tsunami that left survivors unable to access their accounts because their bank cards, books and other identification was destroyed or lost in the disaster.
By 2013, would we see the world using cardless ATM's?
