NINE COMMON MISTAKES THAT AGE YOU
I was going through an article on MSN healthy living - 9 Common Mistakes that Age you. I thought this is something I must share on my blog.
Do you love ice creams, sweets, pastries, cakes, burgers, shakes and those endless list of tantalizing, easy to buy, easily available, easy to eat foods ? Have you thought how our lifestyle choices, certain foods we eat, if we skimp on sleep or if we work too hard, how it can accelerate the ageing process, and make us unhealthy. We excitedly and joyfully send down a variety of food into our bellies. We know it doesn't end with just chewing and swallowing all that tasty stuff. We hardly bother about what happens in there... A huge complex chemical processing goes on inside. Are you concerned if the food you ate just now, was it serving you nutritionally, adding to your health or destroying your health in slow steady manner? Are you a workaholic, do you work too hard? Do you feel you live a stressful life? How about exercise - do you do any, do you love it or hate it? Why should you apply sunblock?
I have to restrict my ice creams to just once in a while after reading what the sugar we consume turns into, the chemical process and what happens.
We all know what is bad for us. Like a label, good/bad. But if you knew exactly why certain foods are bad, what it does to you, why should you avoid it and why is there such an importance being given to 'healthy lifestyle', this must read article on MSN - Healthy Living, that will definitely encourage to adopt a healthy lifestyle.

WEIGHT LOSS - POWER OF THINKING THIN
It's been a long while since I posted on 'Weight Loss'. There is a reason. I have not been doing justice to my weight maintenance plan. And I have a lot of work to do. But I also know, that weight loss is achievable.
How would you define your relationship with food? Do you obsess about food? I was talking to a dear friend and we both agreed, we tend to think about what to eat next, what to cook next, let me try out this recipe, that recipe. Sometimes, we remind ourselves, that we talk so much about food, what restaurant we've been to, or that new restaurant is really good, have you been there...you know, we ordered this and that, oh gosh, it was so delicious..... Whenever we go out, the climax to enjoying the outdoors would end in devouring our favorite foods or trying out some new food in a new restaurant. We have an ocean of restaurants around us that can be so tempting. Thanks to advertisements and tantalizing photographs of food everywhere, we can spoil ourselves tirelessly and mindlessly. I told her, when I return from vacation, we can help each other lose weight.
Poor digestive system. What must be happening inside our body when we eat all those food to entertain ourselves?. Who shall we blame when we get lifestyle illnesses, but us, for our careless food habits and overindulgence. Don't we all engage in some sort of gluttony except for those really enlightened ones who is mindful of everything that they eat, because they know, what long term effect those sweets and fatty foods can have on their health and they consciously restrain from pleasing their taste buds and abusing their bodies. They care about themselves, they care about their health. That's called being responsible for your well being. They care about their liver, pancreas, heart, kidneys and they know how food has a direct effect on our brain, our moods, thinking and clarity of mind. And how being obese or overweight puts their knees, spine and hips under tremendous pressure. What happens when a machine is overworked, overused and not maintained according to specs? Breakdown right? That is what will happen to our bodies. Breakdown and refusal to do it's part because it has been abused, overworked and not maintained. So follow those specs of healthy eating and exercising, you can turn into an enlightened being too!.
We are hard wired to think about food, because food was always ingrained in our subconscious as the ultimate celebration of all events, everything happy from childhood. When food lovers are stressed they go for chocolates, cakes, pastries and carbs and fattening foods. These foods release serotonin the feel good hormone. Like a drug addict or alocholic getting his kicks, we depend on the temporary feel good element food can provide us. The other day, I picked up a 5 kg rice bag from the supermarket. It was so heavy. Well I could carry it, lift it and keep it in the trolley. My husband asked me, that's heavy, how did you lift it?. Imagine, all I did was just lift a 5 kg rice bag and place in my trolley. What if I didn't keep the bag in the trolley and instead walked around for an hour with that bag, how about two of those five kg bags? I would have collapsed, well I would have given up after a little while. I would not last for an hour. Same way, if we are overweight by 5 kg or 10 kg, we are actually struggling each day for 365 days a year to carry about that extra weight. It's as if a 5 kg or 10 kg rice bag has been strapped on to us. It is actually weighing you down, tiring you out, limiting you from experiencing and enjoying life to the fullest. If you are overweight, or desirous of losing weight, next time you go to a supermarket, try lifting a 5 kg rice bag and hold it for a short while, and put it down, you will know what I mean. Imagine the strain and difficulty if you carried two of such bags! So you see, if you weighed 5 kg less, how much lighter and better you would feel. You would be flying around like an acrobat.
Food is for nourishment, not for stuffing or abusing the body. The ego is always on an uncontrollable journey of extremes, believe it or not. Most of the time, we act out of habit rather than logic. The ego says, I want that now, I want this, let me do this, let me eat this, the ego cannot think of consequences, or whether a choice is right or wrong. There is something beyond the ego, beyond your conditioning and your learned habits. Your true essence. What if you stop entertaining your ego and stop giving in to your unhealthy eating habits, and turn to thinking thin?
Thinking thin is a commitment. Stop thinking of all kinds of food that's not good for you for a month. Make a healthy meal plan and stick to it. Think thin. Write down all the foods you need to avoid, in journal under title 'Not Good, Unhealthy' and names of all the food that would help you become thin, under 'Thin and Healthy'. Now you know what foods to stay away from and what foods you should eat. Imagine yourself shedding weight each week and you will. Early morning or before you retire to bed, write an affirmation or mantra in your journal. Write a whole page. For example, "I shall only eat healthy food and stay away from all kinds of food that's bad for me". "I will do what it takes to lose weight by eating healthy and exercising". Be committed to get through the first month successfully and continue the same for the next month and the month after, until you reach your target.
Eat healthy for a month, and you will be so happy with the result that you will experience a re-birth with your new awareness, with your improved state of health and shedding of weight. You will forever want to follow 'Think thin', a permanent journey of good health. You my friend, will be astounded and thrilled at your weight loss. Think thin ! Oh one more thing, no crash diets, no yo-yo diets, no weight loss pills, please. They are harmful.

BEING POSITIVE IN A NEGATIVE ENVIRONMENT
As people, we love sharing our feelings, our day to day life and happenings, good or bad with our family, relatives, friends and even co-workers. They do the same with us too. But what happens when you are amidst negative people or in a negative environment? How does it affect you? Do certain people or environments drain you of your energy, make you sad or upset? Do you find yourself participating in gossip, or listening to slander or constantly being subjected to others' laundry list of whining and complaints? And somehow you end up feeling bad or drained in the end.
People who are negative, who ever they might be, well, remember that these people are stuck with their negative attitude. They are accustomed to talking or behaving in a certain way for most of their life. This is all they know. They are habituated to it. They want to unburden their woes small or big, sometimes in hugely magnified form, onto others. May be they don't even know they are transferring their negativity on to others. No amount of sympathy, consolation or solutions you offer them, would change their attitude. They don't want a solution for their issues. They just need to unburden or lash out or pull you into their drama. Misery loves company, so negative people always target those who are patient listeners.
Negative people are of different kinds, whiners, constant complainers, the aggressive, the hostile, the passive aggressive, sarcastic, criticizing ones, drama king or queens.
Here are some interesting things I'll share and some useful tips for you, to keep your sanity, peace of mind and maintain a postive attitude.
1. Only you alone can decide what state of mind you want to be in.
2. You can't fix other people or their problems. Offer advice only if asked for. When their constant fretting and fuming or out pour of woes begin to bother your peace of mind, you have the choice to discontinue the conversation, change the subject, walk away, or think of a polite excuse.
3. If you participate or respond to other people's negative drama, you will get sucked into it and your peace of mind will be destroyed. It's their drama, you dont' have to participate.
4. With rude, condescending, aggressive, arrogant or sarcastic people, tell them politely how their behavior affects you and what they said was not right or respectful. Remember, their real problem is not you, it's them, it's their negative attitude and inability to interact with respect and courtesy. They are not able to rationally solve issues. In conflicting situations or when there is a difference of opinion, aggressive and arrogant people, constantly feel they need to fight a battle and win by verbal debates, put downs and attacks to protect their egos. You don't have to be a victim of anyone's emotional or verbal attacks. You don't have to be scared of anyone. Be assertive, respectful and express yourself without fear.
5. Don't judge someone by the gossip you hear or some assumptions you make. It may or may not be true or even blown out of proportion . You can judge people from your own experience of dealing with them.
6. Avoid people who are conniving or spread malice. If they are the plotting and scheming types or constantly talk ill about others to you, they certainly will talk ill about you to others.
7. When you gossip about other people, it's disrespectful towards them. If you have an issue or problem with someone, talk to the person concerned and let them know what you feel rather than gossiping about them.
8. It's nice to share and feel connected and help each other in emotional crisis. But when you deal with constant complainers and you feel drained or tired, it's time to avoid them or spend very less time with them. Nothing makes them happier than complaining. Constant complainers don't look for solutions or help, they just work on magnifying their problem, and complaining becomes a way of making a conversation with one sided enjoyment.
9. You cannot control or change other people, you cannot control certain situations. The only thing you can change is yourself, your views, and make wise choices. Choosing to feel and exercise positivity is a comittment, which you have to work on everyday. In every situation, you have the power to chose how to react or respond. Use this power to your advantage by being determined to think and feel positive and not let the negative things or people around you affect you.
10. If you want peace, think and feel peaceful thoughts. Surround yourself with positive people. Consciously nurture a positive attitude and stay away from all the negativity.

GOSSIP
In the Academy award nominated movie Doubt (2008), Father Flynn (played by Philip Seymour Hoffman) gives a beautiful sermon on Gossip:
A woman was gossiping with a friend about a man she hardly knew—that night she had a dream. A great hand appeared over her and pointed down at her. She was immediately seized with an overwhelming sense of guilt. The next day she went to confession. She got the old parish priest, Father O’Rourke, and she told him the whole thing. “Is gossiping a sin?” she asked the old man. “Was that the hand of God Almighty pointing a finger at me? Should I be asking your absolution? Father, tell me, have I done something wrong?”
“Yes!” Father O’Rourke answered her. "You have borne false witness against your neighbor, you have played fast and loose with his reputation, and you should be heartily ashamed!”
So the woman said she was sorry and asked for forgiveness. “Not so fast!” says O’Rourke. “I want you to go home, take a pillow up on your roof, cut it open with a knife, and return here to me!”
So the woman went home, took a pillow off her bed, a knife from the drawer, went up the fire escape to the roof, and stabbed the pillow. Then she went back to the old parish priest as instructed. “Did you gut the pillow with the knife?” he says.”Yes, Father.” “And what was the result?” “Feathers,” she said. A world of feathers.
“Feathers?” he repeated. “Feathers everywhere, Father!”
“Now I want you to go back and gather up every last feather that flew out on the wind!”
“Well,” she said, “it can’t be done. I don’t know where they went. The wind took them all over.”
”And that,” said Father O’Rourke,“is gossip!”

THE SCIENCE AND POWER OF GRATITUDE
We take so many things for granted, our family, friends, jobs, our talents, gifts, and life itself. Sometimes we are so caught up with what we don't have and the need to acquire more, giving more energy to our disappointments, that we forget to be thankful, grateful or appreciate the love, kindness and support of people in our lives, or the bounties and blessings we have or even care to remind ourselves of the good things that happened to us through time or recently or how fortunate we are in so many ways. There is nothing wrong in pursuing one's dreams and ambitions or even wanting more through right means. But remember to be grateful because being grateful is a way of thanking the universe for all abundant blessings showered on you and attracting good things into your life. When you are grateful, positive vibrations and good hormones are produced in your body. You will experience less stress. You are in harmony with yourself, you will be able to handle and overcome negative situations and people. With your body and mind nourished by the power of gratitude, those good vibrations form the very basis of law of attraction.
A sense of gratitude in your daily life is so powerful, that it helps you to steer the course to manifest your desires, attracting the things you focus on, through clarity of your intent, desire and faith. It improves relationships, increases problem solving skills, you begin to wear a healthier attitude, increases productivity and gives you happiness. To start off, how can you exercise gratitude? Think or write down five good things that happened in your life or recently - even small things. Be happy, thankful and appreciate those events or happenings. Appreciate people who were there for you emotionally or physically or helped you. Pass on the kindness. Time and again, make a mental list of different good things, blessings and miracles small or big that has happened to you in your life. Be grateful for the bounties of the universe. Offer your gratitude in prayers. You will feel and radiate a sense of peace and joy.

In September 2007, there was a beautiful and inspiring article published in Reader's Digest, "New Science of Thankyou" that explained how scientific research came to the conclusion that gratitude plays a huge role in physical and emotional wellbeing. According to the article published in Reader's Digest, people who were grateful,
* Felt better about their lives
* Were more optimistic
* Were more energetic
* Were more enthusiastic
* Were more determined
* Were more interested
* Were more joyful
* Exercised more
* Had fewer illnesses
* Got more sleep
* Were more likely to have helped someone
What are the things you are grateful for?

2013 - NEW YEAR MESSAGE
Hi everyone! Happy New Year to all you great readers.
We had a great vacation - a beautiful birthday celebration, a very joyful Christmas and a memorable New Year's eve with our daughter in UK. I enjoyed the great sales and discounts during christmas and did a lot of shopping. Its so freezing cold here in Kuwait, that I feel lazy to go out. So I havent had the opportunity to actually wear all the new stuff I bought. Waiting for the weather to improve. Somehow the winter in Birmingham was nice, there was so much to do and see that the cold weather nor the slight rains bother us in anyway. I'll be posting photos we took in and around Birmingham. A huge thanks to our daughter; she made our days very special.
I can't believe 2012 is over and another new year has begun. So what are your aspirations, dreams and New Year resolutions for this year? Was 2012 a good year or it wasn't? Do you secretly hope and wish for 2013 to be a wonderful year? What we view as good or bad is based on the attitude we hold towards life and how we perceive and interpret things, situations, people or incidents, how we chose to act or react, what choices we make with our free will. We all are equipped with an internal guidance system, some call it an inner voice, or intuition that guides us. It's important to pay heed to those signs and thoughts that guide you to what's truly good. This happens when you quieten your mind and other distracting thoughts and seek answers from within.
Are you concerned how to make your dreams and aspirations come true?. Are you worried that you may not fulfill your New Year resolutions although you want to see them become a reality? To unleash your potential, how about embarking on a journey of self discovery...We are creatures of habit. It takes 21 days to form a new habit. For example, if you want get up an hour earlier than to rush to work looking haggard, its not difficult, when you set your alarm and get yourself out of bed early, and you repeat that for 21 days, it becomes a new habit. If you decide not to snap at others, then, consciously refrain from doing so and voila, you will be a more peaceful person, not reacting and raising your blood pressure in just 21 days. If you want to start an exercise regime, don't fall prey to the lazy talk your mind gives you. Keep exercising for 21 days and it becomes a healthy habit.
Look into your past and present, explore what's actually stopping you from achieving what you want, what are those blocks or fears?. Or is it laziness or procrastination or is it that you don't think you have what it takes?. Have those unresolved issues or past pain that you constantly give life and form to turned into troublesome monsters in your mind?. Identify your strengths and talents and cultivate a sense of gratefulness for all the good things and blessings in your life that might taken a back seat. Gratitude reaps abundance. Be determined to change your negative thoughts or beliefs imposed by yourself or others, that prevent you from achieving what you want. Leave the past where it belongs, in the past. Let go of disappointments, sorrow and pain and travel light, and see how good you feel. Let the lessons of the past guide you make better choices. Obstacles and failures are a but a natural part of life. Don't remain fallen and wallow in self pity. You will find a way to overcome the obstacles. Whenever you fall, the wounds will heal through time. Get up to face the challenges. Remember fortune favors the brave.
Every new day that's gifted to you is an opportunity to engage positively in your life and you have the power to choose to do what's best for you. When we don't think positive thoughts, our negative attitudes, vibrations and tendencies are likely to attract negative situations and life loses it's lustre, beauty and meaning. Our circumstances will not always be perfect due to the constant dualities that exist in nature. However we can live a wholesome, healthier and happier life through a positive attitude, healthy lifestyle, faith and a personal and professional ethic that touches all spheres of life.
May 2013 be a great year for all.
Peace and Blessings,

ENERGY HEALING - QUANTUM EMOTIONAL AND PHYSICAL RELEASE BY PAUL EMERY
Last Saturday I attended an energy healing workshop conducted by Paul Emery called 'Quantum Emotional and Physical Release'. It was held at Six Senses Spa, Hotel Missoni.
Energy healing is a holistic approach to wellness in our daily lives. We are an energy system or rather, each of us is an energy machine. It's believed since ancient times and over the years, scientifically proven that energy travels through the body along the channels called meridians. Each organ in our body has energy associated with it and each organ interacts with particular emotions on a mental and emotional level. Physical pain (unless its medical), emotional stress and trauma, addictions are caused by anxiety, which leads to energy blocks in our body. Energy blocks can affect the immune system as well. Paul will conduct an energy test, identify the block, and clear it with simple techniques, like tapping certain pressure points or regulating the energy flow through hand movements and by helping you breathe correctly. During stress, the brain, heart and nervous system become chaotic and the energy is out of balance. Energy healing and simple breathing will get it into synchronization. Besides helping you rid your addictions, physical pain and emotional stress, weight issues, Paul Emergy would teach you to heal yourself and others as well.
Energy healing is used for eliminating headaches, migranes, fears and phobias. One interesting thing Paul Emery mentioned was that perfumes, colognes and washing powder are full of chemicals and they can cause energy blocks or prevent healthy flow of energy and so can some of the foods you eat. Pay attention to how you feel after you've eaten something and you end up feeling tired, or ill or if it alters your mood in a negative way. This can help you identify what's good and not good for you. Constant use of electrical and electronic equipment, mobile phones, computers, television disrupts the body's energy system. Energy healing is also used to help someone perform better in business or sports or those to want to work on their positives to improve their life. To know more about Paul Emergy and energy healing he practises visit his website Here
Paul Emery is a gifted healer and he is a wealth of information. He will be available at Six Senses Spa until October 29, if you wish to avail of the amazing healing techniques and rid your fears, phobias, stress, emotional or physical pain, weight issues or plain just want to improve your life. For an energy healing session with Paul Emery, contact Six Senses Spa for charges and other details.

EVERYDAY WISDOM - ESCAPE CONSUMER TRAP
![]() |
Everyday I enjoy listen to the radio while I work in the kitchen. My work becomes a pleasureable activity as I keep listening to the beautiful songs and programs being aired. What I find a bit annoying in the middle of the bliss, are the advertisements after every two songs! Brands, products and shops are constantly being promoted aggressively and the radio jockey keeps asking the same thing, 'have'nt you been here or there, there is this offer....best price...least price...if you haven't gone there, make sure you do'. What does this do to you? Even if you didnt want to buy something, you would be curious, tempted and literally forced to go to this place they spoke about and buy stuff you may not even need.
Well, besides the radio, every day, we come across millions of visual messages in the form of advertisements that center around clothes, toys, personal care products, electronic gadgets and equipment, mobile phones and lots of tempting various offers on T.V., or when you are walking or driving in the street, at shopping centers and department stores or malls. Let's not forget the advertisements for food, snacks, beverages that contain high amount of fats, salt and sugar. These advertisements dominate our personal lives. We want everything we see, because we are being brainwashed to want to buy them. It's not just parents, but teenagers and children aslo fall into the consumer trap. And when you don't have the budget or money to buy yourself what you saw in the ads or what your friend has, it can lead to a sense of frustration, sadness and unhappiness. Children too would put pressure on parents to buy them stuff their friends have or what they saw on T.V. or in a shop.
Consumerism - Is this truly the road to happiness or a bottomless pit of unending wants, which if unfulfilled is causes discontentment? Do we really need all the stuff we keep buying because the advertisements subtley yet persistently encourage us to buy. How much is enough? They make us feel endless buying is essential and normal. You visit your friend and realize he has a new car, or new gadget or new wardrobe or new furniture or new tableware and you want the same or better for yourself. Don't let what other people have bother you. Be happy for them and buy only what you genuinely or truly need, considering the affordability as well. Otherwise, constantly acquiring new stuff will become a hard to break habit that leads to temporary happiness and has negative consequences environmentally, emotionally and socially. Let me share a fact with you, which you should always remember. Big business brands and enterpreneurs are always finding new ways to target consumers and forcing them to believe in acquiring new products and engage them in endless spending. Why? to make their business grow. What's the solution, it's simple, ecourage yourself and your family to buy only what you truly need, that fits your budget. Make intelligent money management a family affair.

Here is a beautiful quote I'd like to share. "The purchase of a new product, especially a ‘big ticket’ item such as a car or computer, typically produces an immediate surge of pleasure and achievement and often confers status and recognition upon the owner. Yet as the novelty wears off, the emptiness threatens to return. The standard consumer solution is to focus on the next promising purchase".- From the book, The All Consuming Self by Allen Kanner and Mary Gomes

ARE T.V.'s, COMPUTERS AND GADGETS MAKING PEOPLE DEAF?
Did you face this dilemna ...you are talking to your spouse, or teen, sibling or friend and he or she 'selectively' does hear what you say, because the person is so engrossed watching T.V, or using the computer or reading a book, or sending text messages, or busy on the iPAD. Do you find you have to repeat yourself, as suddenly the person you are talking to goes, 'What did you say', and worst....returns to watching T.V., or computer or some gadget and half hears what you say or still does not 'hear' what you say. The reason is, the person's mind is so busy and occupied that they exhibit 'inattentional' deafness, as psychologists put it, subconsciously turning down the volume on anything else going around him, as his mind is totally engrossed in the gadget, that he cannot hear what is being said when someone is talking to him.
Are people getting so intimate with their gadgets that they are turning deaf...paying little or no attention to the real life people around them. It's absolutely rude, uncaring and discourteous. People who are glued to their gadgets have to stop what they are doing and listen if someone is talking to them. Or else gadget lovers would have to face big time trouble with relationships in the long run.....

WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE TO ATTRACT INTO YOUR LIFE?
Being humans, we are always desiring a lot of things. Some desires are good for us and some aren't. Sometimes certain unfulfilled desires make us less appreciative of life and we brood forgettting our blessings and what we have, our inner resources and what else is possible.
