HOW TO GET YOURSELF TO EXERCISE AND STOP GIVING EXCUSES

Have you felt like this? You want to exercise, really intend to. But then when it's time to actually exercise, as if under some spell, you start making excuses until the urge to exercise goes away. And you tell yourself, okay, I am going to really start or go back to my exercise regime 'tomorrow' or 'next week', giving yourself false promises, followed by a false sense or relief. Somewhere inside, you feel bad for a while and then give up and go back to a sedentary routine and once in while remind yourself, 'oh I should start exercising' and the desire remains somewhere at the end of your wish list.

Well, you know what you have to do? Go against your mind and body's lethargy. Don't live under the umbrella of procrastination. Don't listen to those excuses that crops up whatever they might be. Block them. Defy them. And "just start" exercising for at least 10 minutes a day, 5 times a week. Its' not a huge amount of time. In a few days to a week,  you will begin to feel comfortable exercising and look forward to those special 10 minutes. Do you know why? It's because you begin to feel good, vibrant and more energetic as exercise releases good hormones into your blood stream. You get to enjoy physical and psychological benefits you never experienced before. Gradually increase it to 15 minutes and then, a little more. In a few weeks, increase it to half an hour and then gradually in few months, exercise for 45 minutes to an hour.

Make exercise a compulsory and essential part of life and enjoy a multitude of health benefits.

EXERCISE TO LOOK AND FEEL GOOD

Motivation is what gets you started. Habit is what keeps you going. - Jim Ryan.

Winter is when people tend to eat more. Summer is approaching in two months and it's time to get rid of the excess weight you might have put on during winter or even through time. Motivate yourself to get started. Make exercise a part of your daily routine, an essential habit. It will make you look and feel good, improve your health and uplift your spirits.

MY PHOTO OF THE DAY - RUNNING OF THE BEACH FOR EXERCISE

One of the best ways to build your stamina and strengthen your muscles is to walk, jog or run on the beach. It's a wonderful exercise and you will love it if you like the sea and sand. It rejuvenates your mind, de-stresses and gives you a renewed sense of energy and vitality. The weather is just fantastic to exercise at the beach. Here is a photo I took of some people running on the beach, near the Towers.

WEIGHT LOSS - DO YOU FIND EXERCISE BORING?

Does this happen to you? Well, it does to me at times. There are days I have to literally force myself to exercise. I don't have a problem with dieting, eating healthy, choosing the right foods and so on. I rather read or write or do something creative with my time than exercise. I tell myself, think of the wonderful health benefits exercise can offer and when it comes to weight loss, you have to exercise (besides eating healthy) - there is no other way. I look at people much older than me exercise with dedication and zeal.  Let me tell you why they do it. Since I've been there and done it...I can guarantee that if you exercise everyday, you will feel so energised, empowered and experience a great sense of well being. Only exercise can do that for you. Don't forget to combine it with healthy eating.

So, is this motivating enough to start an exercise plan? If you can't do it alone, rope in a family member, friend or colleague to exercise with. Join a gym. Go for walks in the park or walk on your treadmill.  Do some kind of calorie burning exercise if you need to lose weight.

SWIMMING FOR LEISURE FUN AND EXERCISE

Swimming besides a great form of exercise, is also relaxing, because water provides therapeutical benefits and relieves stress. Now that's its summer, and  it's so hot outside, what better way to beat the heat and yet have fun. There are plenty of indoor and outdoor swimming pools in Kuwait or you can even swim in the beaches where it's safe. And before you head for swimming, check out the swim wear in Marks and Spencer, Debenhams and Bhs. They have a great collection in beautiful colors and designs. Now if you don't know to swim, why not join a swimming class. Don't worry about your age or if you are scared of water. They will teach you in the shallow area first and until you are ready and confident to swim in the deeper area of the pool. And in a month or two you will be swimming like a fish.

DON'T IGNORE YOUR BODY'S NEED FOR EXERCISE

If you are not one of those people who enjoy / love / appreciate physical activity, then it might be a bit difficult to get yourself to exercise everyday, worse - even more difficult to lose weight. You can give yourself all the excuses you want, but if you deprive your body of exercise, you are heading for trouble. We are not created to be sedentary. Our bodies need physical activity to keep healthy. One of the best exercise is walking. Now that spring has started, why not go for walks at the water front, or walk on the sand at the beach or in the park. Wouldn't it be fun to go swimming or  join an aerobics class or a gym with your friends and watch the weight drop. If you like to dance or wish to learn dance, why not join dance classes, that way you will learn dancing as well as get exercise. If you are shy or unwilling to join any exercise class, put on some nice peppy music and dance to the rhythm or get a low to medium intensity aerobics CD, watch and follow the moves, right at the comfort of your home. If you like visiting malls, go an hour early, take a medium or brisk paced walk in the mall for 45 minutes to an hour before you look around in the shops.

I hope this motivates you to exercise...after all your health is so important; no one can 'give' you good health, it can't be 'bought'. It is something only you can gift yourself !

Lets look at some of the benefits of exercise:

1. Exercise will lead to healthy weight and keep your heart healthy.
2. Improves mood, memory and concentration.
3. Reduced Risk Of Certain Cancers if you exercise and keep your weight under check (Obesity is increases risk to cancer).
4. Lower Incidence Of Diabetes.
5. Exercise reduces weight. This helps build healthy bones and muscles. (Excess weight puts lot of stress on joints, bones and muscles).
6. You are able to move about comfortably (simple tasks such as walking, bending over, walking up and down the stairs, squatting which seem difficult for a sedentary person or overweight person become easy through regular exercise) .
7. Higher Energy Levels.
8. Help you sleep better.

9. Decreased risk to injuries.
10. Reduces pain in muscle and joints ( In a sedentary life, muscles are underused, and the result is tightness, weakness, and imbalance that leads to muscle and joint pain).

START EXERCISING - GET READY FOR SUMMER

It is exercise alone that supports the spirits, and keeps the mind in vigor - Cicero

Very soon it's going to be summer. Do you have plans to shape up, get into your summer clothes? Well, even if you are 'in shape', it's still important to exercise. Those of you wishing to shed some weight, don't keep wishing...do something about it, cut down on the fats and sweets, eat less, eat light, but eat healthy and you've got to exercise.  Plan your exercise regime...walk, jog, yoga, aerobics, cardio...whatever you feel comfortable. You could do 2 days of aerobics, 2 days of yoga, followed by 2 days of walking. Or you could just go walking in the good weather outside or walk on your treadmill at home. Do specific spot exercises to tone problem areas like upper arms, waist, stomach, hip, thighs, legs, so on.  If you suffer from knee or joint pains and have limitations in exercising, walking is the best exercise along with any exercise recommended by your physician or physiotherapist. If you find it boring to exercise alone, ask your friend(s) to join you. Exercise for a week and see how good you feel. Get addicted to exercise!

Walk - 45 (brisk), 1 hour (moderate speed), 1.5 hours (normal speed)
Aerobics - half hour to 45 mts
Swimming - half hour to 45 mts
Yoga - 45 mts
Jogging - 20 mts to half hour

SIMPLE EXERCISE FOR YOUR KNEE

Instead of going for complicated stretches for strengthening your knee,  do this simple exercise to strengthen your knee joint and prevent arthritis.  Spend 30 seconds daily reaching for your toes while sitting straight legged on the floor. This will make your hamstrings flexible and keep your knee in top shape.

SUNSET AT MARINA WATERFRONT

Here are some pictures I took yesterday during my walk at the Marina Waterfront. The sunset was truly amazing. And each time I have been there for my walk, the canvas of the sky painted a different scene.  If you are there from around 4.40pm to 5.10pm on a clear day, you can get to view a magnificent sunset and watch the play of colours in the sky!

BEAUTIFUL SKY

It was a bright, beautiful afternoon when I started my walk at 4pm in the Salmiah Park yesterday. On a clear day, the most enjoyable thing about my walk is gazing into the sky as I walk, just to watch the magnificent colours of the sky change from pleasant cerulean blue to lilac, lavender and shades of pink towards sunset. It's just amazing. Here are some pictures I took of the beautiful sky. A lot things come for free which we overlook and forget to appreciate. We have nice public parks and water front walkways from Scientific Center in Salmiyah, stretching to Kuwait City - where you can cycle, or jog or walk.  I was thinking nature has so much to offer - nothing beats just being out in the the open and enjoying nature as well as getting your exercise. A healthy treat for your body and soul! Okay, here are the sky pictures.

It was a nice sight - the plane flying in the sky against the backdrop of the light from the setting sun.
